Server Time-Out Guide

Why do I time-out?
There could be several reasons for timing-out when entering a game.   The cause could be on your side or on the server side, but if time-out for all servers, it is most likely something on your end. Hopefully this information will help you solve the problem.

1.  Game Version mis-match?
If you do not have the same version of the game that is on the server, you will time-out when trying to access. If you are running version 1.0 you will not be able to access a server running 1.11, and the same is true in reverse.  More information below!

2.  MOHAA Net Connection Setting?
Setup of net-connection in MOHAA. More Details below.

3.  Behind Firewall or Router?
If you have a router and/or firewall software, you will have problems connecting with all servers until you open the appropriate ports for the game. Try accessing a game with your firewall shut off to confirm if this is the area to work on. If you are using a router, and have the ability to Open or forward ports, see my router page for port settings. Some people have firewall software, and some say that they must turn it off to play while others do not have a problem. Again, check to see if there are port settings allowed.

4.  Conflict with other software or virus scan?
Some have said that they have problems when other software is running on their PC. Some people claim that virus protection software prevented connection (I have not experienced this problem), and others have had problem when running other communications software such as ICQ. Try shutting down other applications before launching the game.

5.  Bad connection?
It is possible that the connection is just too slow or you have lost connection. Check the server on the browser, and if ping is still good, try connecting again. In the case of a lost connection from the server, you may also time-out during the game.

Why do I get disconnected?
After you have entered a game, you may also be disconnected and will not know why.

Wrong map?
If just connecting to the server, and then you are suddenly disconnected, or if playing, and at the end of the map you are disconnected, it is a very good possibility that you do not have the map being played or loaded on the server.   If the server is running a custom map and you do not have it, you will be disconnected immediately.   Look at the server listing for the server, and note the map name.   If you can locate the map and load it on your PC, you should be able to then access the game.

Kicked from server?
If you are suddenly disconnected from a game, it is also possible that you were kicked. The admin of the server can kick anyone, and within a game, players can vote to kick a player. Some admins kick higher ping players, and sometimes kick others that are suspected of cheating.

There are also server monitoring programs out there that will kick players with high pings, cheats or cheat hacks, and in some cases, unauthorized skins.

Game Version mis-match
The most Common Reason for Time-Out when Accessing a server

Make sure you are trying to access a server with the same Game Version as you have on your computer.  If the server is running with patch 1.11 and you are on the original version of the game or earlier patch, you will not be able to join the game and will time-out.  If you already have patch 1.11 loaded properly, and try to access a server with an older version, you will also time-out. Make sure you are accessing a server with the same version as in your computer.

Need patch 1.11?
Here are two sites that provide the patch file for download. Select the latest patch for your area and download it to your MOHAA/main directory.  The patch is an EXE file, so after you have downloaded the file, go to the directory where you placed it and double click on the file to install.

How can I tell what version the server has?
In Gamespy, this is really easy, and there are two methods to determine what version is being run on servers.

Individual Server Information
You can view the information about an individual server by pressing the small triangle next to the server name. A view like the one below will open up, and you can see the patch version listed. 1.00, 1.10, or 1.11 will be displayed.

Filtering server listing on game spy by version.
On the screen shot below from GameSpy Arcade, you can see the drop down menu that is displayed when you press the Medal of Honor Banner (see picture). From this menu, you can click on version 1.00, 1.10, or 1.11 which will filter the listing of servers to be displayed.

Game Settings in Medal of Honor?
Some have stated that if you did not set your internet speed setting correctly in Medal Of Honor, you will experience problems with multi-player game.   I do not know if this is actually true, but it is an easy adjustment worth trying.

Launch Medal of Honor, and click on the far right hand door for Multiplayer. You will then see a screen with a locker on the left side, click on the locker and you will see the screen below. In this screen you can choose the skins to use in multiplayer and set your game name.  However, make sure that the "Net Connection" is set for the connection type you have to the internet.
